Bonus Lesson - Flying Tidbits
Introduction -
Now, of course we've covered broomsticks and how to fly them. But those aren't the only things that fly. In this lesson we're going to cover other things that fly, how they work, and lots of other cool facts about them! I hope your excited for this extra chance to learn more about the magical world of flying!
Flying Carpets -
Broomsticks are popular in the "western world" but in the far east, especially in India, carpets have the flying spells cast on them. Seeing as the carpet industry is much more advanced and popular, countries in Asia and the Middle East use their beautiful and introcate carpets as their means of transportation. But there are a few downfalls to these modes of transportation. Part of the reason why they aren't as widely used as broomsticks, is because of their tendency to fray and fade and gradually lose their ability to work properly.
However if you really think you want a carpet that will fly, you better not expect to be able to own one of them in Britian. The Ministry of Magic has outlawed flying carpets in Britain. Their reasoning behind the ban is because they saw the carpets as a muggle object that should not be charmed. Therefore the Ministry has placed carpets on the Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects. So if you were hoping for a flying carpet, sorry to crush your hopes and dreams.

Flying Carriage -
Yet another example of flying happened when Harry Potter was in Hogwarts and the Triwizard Tournament was in session. In order to get to Hogwarts for one of their students to compete, Beauxbatons School of Magic in France used their flying carriage to arrive. What is this carriage you ask? Well it goes in part with our next topic. The carriage is a large powder blue color that served as a house for the students and headmistress of the school. Now you're probably wondering how the carriage flew. Well, it's actually very simple. The carriage is pulled by a grand total of twelve flying horses! Abraxan horses to be exact! Why did it take twelve horses? Well, it's a giant house and a giant as a headmistress, you do the math.
Winged Horses -
Now these horses are much different from normal horses you've probably seen. They seem like regular horses...just with wings...oh and the ability to fly of course. There are four kinds of winged horses that are common in the world.
Abraxan: These horses are compared to the muggle species Palominos. (Twelve of these kind brought the carriage to Hogwarts and are said to be the size of elephants!)
Aethonan: This breed is common in Britian and Ireland regions. They are usually chestnut in color as well.
Granian: The name of these horses give away their color. Yes, they are gray. But what most people don't know is that these horses are extremely fast! So watch out!
Thestral: This breed is extremely rare and have a very strange ability. They are black in color, but only allow themselves to be seen to those who have seen death. So it's not always a great thing to see this breed of horses!
Lastly you should know that these winged horses require a great amount of care and need to have a firm training otherwise they might trample you! And we wouldn't want that to happen! Not to mention their diet is quite odd. They only drink single-malt whiskey. Or at least that's what the Beauxbatons give their horses! Anyway, I don't reccommend these animals as pets! But that's about it for flying animals! (That we'll cover anyways) Feel free to head on over to the homework page for a chance at more points!
